HKUMed Students Witness the Excitement as Observers at the 15th National Games! 🔥

Twenty dedicated medical students from HKUMed had the extraordinary opportunity to serve as observers at the 15th National Games in Hong Kong, gaining invaluable first-hand experience in sports medicine and emergency care.

“At the 15th National Games Track Cycling competitions, our medical students gained a unique perspective on emergency care in a sporting environment. They learned how every team member has a defined role and saw how doctors, nurses and paramedics work together. They realised the physical demands of carrying an emergency backpack filled with intubation equipment and medications. They discovered that certain drugs may be restricted under sporting regulations, requiring careful judgment and clear patient counselling. They were also taught how to protect themselves when stepping onto the field. And beyond the medical side, they learned a great deal about the different track cycling events themselves!” shared Prof Amy Ng (Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care), who led one of the student groups.

MBBS student Ma Hoi Lam Joyce, reflected, “As a fifth-year medical student, my opportunity to observe the medical team at the 15th National Games in Hong Kong was both enlightening and impactful. I witnessed how integral communication was to the effectiveness of the medical support. The medical staff coordinated efficiently with event organisers, police, and paramedics to ensure a seamless line of communication. From observing their interactions and witnessing their professionalism, I understood that collaboration was crucial for quickly mobilising medical assistance when needed, especially in a crisis environment.” Joyce observed both basketball and track cycling events.

Led by Prof. Tak-Man Wong (Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology), Prof. Amy Ng (Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care), and Prof. Arthur Cheung (Department of Emergency Medicine), our student observers gained invaluable skills in professionalism, teamwork, and emergency management—competencies that will undoubtedly shape their future clinical practice.
